Reddit takes copyright notices through its own web form, and it's clear about what it does once a notice is valid: it removes the post, tells the person who posted it, and confirms with you. Here's what the form asks for, what Reddit may pass along to the poster, and what can happen after.
Is it a copyright issue?
Reddit's own example of a copyright violation fits most leaks: "A Reddit user downloads a photo taken from a content creator's social media page, and posts it to Reddit with no alterations." Another of its examples is sharing "a hyperlink that initiates the download of an unauthorized copy."
Reddit also says some uses may not violate its policy, and gives fair use in the United States as an example. A post that only describes your work, or heavily transforms or parodies it, may not count.
If you sell your work. Reddit has a separate legal form for intimate images shared without consent, under the U.S. Take It Down Act. If you own the copyright in content you sell, the copyright form below is the route for it.
How to file a copyright notice with Reddit
Reddit's Copyright overview says: "If you are a copyright owner or their authorized representative, please use this form to report potential Copyright Policy violations." The form is on Reddit's help site: Copyright report form. Reddit's User Agreement also lists its Copyright Agent at copyright@reddit.com.
Have these ready. Reddit's form asks for:
- The exact Reddit link. "A properly-formatted Reddit URL begins with 'https://www.reddit.com...'" To get it, use the "Share" button under the post or comment and "copy link." Reddit warns: "Incorrectly formatted Reddit URLs will not be processed."
- Your work. What it is, its title, and optionally a link to your original.
- Names. The copyright owner's "full name (first and last name or business name)." If someone else files for you, they give their own first and last name, and Reddit says: "We do not accept initials, nicknames, aliases, or stage names." The owner field lists a first and last name or a business name, and doesn't list a stage name as an option.
- Contact details. Your email address, and a street address, city, state or province, postal code and country.
- Two required statements: a good faith belief that the use "is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law," and a statement "under penalty of perjury that the information in this notice is accurate and I am authorized to act on behalf of the copyright owner."
- An electronic signature. You type your full name, and Reddit says "your signature must exactly match the first and last names that you entered at the top of this form."
Reddit says to "include all of the required information in your takedown notice to avoid delayed processing."
What Reddit may share with the poster
The form says Reddit "may share basic information about your notice with the reported user (e.g., copyright owner's name, a description of the alleged violation, email address) upon request." It suggests that if you're concerned about your personal email, you "may wish to provide a business email address or have an authorized representative submit" the notice for you.
What happens after a valid notice
Reddit's Copyright overview lists three steps. When it receives a valid notice, it will:
- "Remove the violative content identified in the notice"
- "Notify the user who posted the content that we received a copyright takedown notice regarding the content and that we removed it"
- "Confirm with the reporter that we removed the content"
It adds: "In appropriate circumstances, Reddit bans user accounts that repeatedly violate Reddit's Copyright Policy. We may also ban subreddits after multiple removals of violative content or where it is clear that the subreddit is dedicated to sharing violative content."
The poster can respond. Reddit says a poster who thinks the removal was a mistake "may submit an appeal within six months of receiving the content removal message." Its User Agreement also describes a counter notification. If you get one, read what a counter-notice means for you.
Before you send
Reddit's User Agreement warns that "if you knowingly misrepresent that any activity or material on our Services is infringing, you may be liable to Reddit for certain costs and damages." The form also says abuse of its reporting systems "may result in delayed processing of your reports or the suspension of your ability to submit future reports." If someone else shot the photo or video, check who owns it first. Our takedown guide explains ownership.
You can do this yourself, for free
You can file Reddit's copyright form yourself. None of the Reddit pages we read mention a fee. For rule-breaking that isn't copyright, Reddit says you can use "the report button next to the content." Reddit posts often get copied to other sites, so it's worth reading our guides to looking for other copies of your work and getting copies delisted from Google.
What nobody can promise
Nobody can promise every copy comes down. Reddit acts on notices it finds valid, and a poster can appeal or send a counter notification. Reddit's own help center says "Reddit may modify or deviate from those processes in its discretion." New posts are new copies and need new notices.
Quick answers
Can I use my stage name on Reddit's copyright form?
Reddit's form asks for the owner's full name as a first and last name or a business name. For someone filing on your behalf, Reddit says: "We do not accept initials, nicknames, aliases, or stage names."
Will the poster see who reported them?
They might. Reddit says it "may share basic information about your notice with the reported user (e.g., copyright owner's name, a description of the alleged violation, email address) upon request."
Where LeakVoid fits
Filing one form is fine. Filing it again for every repost is what wears people down. With LeakVoid, you send us the links. We prepare your notices. You review and sign each one, and we send them. For Reddit, we email your signed notices to Reddit's Copyright Agent at copyright@reddit.com, and your dashboard shows each notice's status. If a poster sends a counter-notice, we pause that item and forward it to you. We don't give legal advice, and we can't promise Reddit will remove a post.
The LeakVoid plan, $17.99 a month, plus any sales tax that applies where you live. Available in the US only.
